Historical Context & Provenance

This two‑piece afternoon dress in the elegant shade of “café au lait”, dating to around 1890, originates from America and represents a refined example of late Victorian fashion. Afternoon dresses of this period often combined structured silhouettes with decorative textile contrasts, and this ensemble reflects that aesthetic beautifully.

Material & Design

The dress is made of silk taffeta with a subtle shimmer, giving the fabric depth and movement. The bodice features a gathered black silk satin front panel, edged with appliqued satin ruffles that create a striking contrast. The belt and cuffs are crafted from the same black silk, with the belt adorned by a small decorative buckle.

An attached lace collar frames the neckline, while sewn‑on lace enriches the sleeves. The skirt continues the black satin applications, arranged to imitate the open robe style of 18th‑century gowns, a fashionable historicist reference in late 19th‑century dressmaking.

Condition

The dress is very well preserved, with expected minor signs of age: discreet underarm stains, scattered tiny spots, and some missing hooks and eyes. The bust front panel requires stitching on one side, and the lace shows staining in a few areas. These small imperfections are typical for garments of this age and do not detract from its overall beauty. Decoration not included.
